About Coimbatore

The second largest city of Tamil Nadu, Coimbatore is also known as the “Manchester of South India” since it is a hub of textile industries. Besides textiles, Coimbatore is flooded with engineering units and software companies. Coimbatore is situated in the western part of Tamil Nadu close to the Tamil Nadu – Kerala border. The city has a proximity to the hill stations of Ooty, Coonoor and Valparai. The nearest railway junction and air port to these tourist spots are in Coimbatore and as a result, the city attracts lot of tourists throughout the year.

History

Coimbatore came under the rule of Chola dynasty in the 10th century. In the 15th century, it became a part of the Vijayanagara Empire. In the 18th century Coimbatore was annexed to the Kingdom of Mysore under Hyder Ali and later Tipu Sultan. In the year 1799, British East India Company defeated Tipu Sultan and made Coimbatore a part of the Madras Presidency. Though the industrialization of Coimbatore was begun as early as in 1888, the textile industry flourished here during 1920s and 1930s. The natives of Coimbatore actively participated in the freedom struggle and soon after independence, industrialization of Coimbatore gained momentum. The Coimbatore Corporation was constituted in the year 1981.

Tourist Attraction

Thanks to the nearby mountain ranges with thick forests, Coimbatore has a pleasant climate. In Coimbatore, summer is not very severe and winter is also mild. The land is surrounded by the Western Ghats and reserve forests. River Noyyal flows through the southern part of Coimbatore. Coimbatore is rich in vegetation due to its proximity to the Western Ghats. The tourist locations of Western Ghats, Anaimalai and Munnar are near to Coimbatore. Forests occupy 20% of land in Coimbatore district. Wild animals like elephant, wild boars, leopard, tiger and bison are living in these forests. The Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Western Ghats. The forests are rich in rare trees like teak, sandalwood, rosewood, bamboo etc. Coimbatore is the home for more than hundred varieties of resident and migratory bird species. The main tourist spots in and around Coimbatore include he Aliyar Dam and Monkey Falls, Kovai Kutralam, Salim Ali Orinthology Centre at Anaikatty, Cholayar Dam, Botanical Garden at Tamilnadu Agricultural Universiti, The Vaithehi Falls, Kallar Horticultural Farms and Indira Gandhi National Park at Top Slip.

Coimbatore gets rains from the South-west monsoon as well as North-East monsoon. It has an average annual rainfall of 700 mm. The residents of Coimbatore are getting drinking water from three protected drinking water schemes – Siruvani, Pilloor I and Pilloor II.

Commercial Activity

Coimbatore is one of the most industrialized cities in South India. There are more than 25000 large, medium and small scale industries here. They include textiles, Engineering units, foundries, hosiery units, poultries and software units. The black soil of Coimbatore is suitable for cotton cultivation. The major market places in Coimbatore city are Big Bazzar Street, Oppanakkara Street, Sukravarpettai, Cross Cut Road and D B Road. Coimbatore is an economically rich city.

The population of Coimbatore is more than 150000. There are a lot of Keralites and North Indians settled in Coimbatore. Cinema is the most popular entertainment in Coimbatore.

Educational Institutions

Coimbatore is in the fore front of education also. There are three government universities here – Bharathiar University, Anna University of Technology and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. In addition to these, there are four autonomous universities also. There are two medical colleges, various Engineering and Arts & Science colleges, Polytechnic Institutions and hundreds of higher Secondary Schools in Coimbatore.

Health Care

The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital was started in 1969. There are a number of large multi-specialty hospitals with latest facilities and equipments. People from neighboring states also come to Coimbatore for treatment.

Transport

The Coimbatore air-port at Peelamedu is connected to all major cities in India by domestic flights. It is connected to Sharjah and Singapore by international flights. The Coimbatore Railway Junction is connected to all major cities and towns of India. It is the second biggest station of Southern Railway in revenue collection. There are three National Highways passing through Coimbatore. The city is connected to all parts of Tamil Nadu by bus service. Inter-state bus services are also there to Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry. Intra-city bus services operate from the Town Bus Stand at Gandhi puram.
