The Coimbatore Airport is situated at Peelamedu, about 15 kms away from the city. It was started in the 1940s and at that time it was a civil aerodrome. During early 1987 the runway was expanded and new terminal building was constructed. Subsequently the airport underwent periodic expansion and modernization.
At present, Coimbatore airport has only one terminal and the second one is under construction. The upcoming terminal at Nilambur will be exclusively for passenger traffic and the old terminal at Peelamedu is to be used for cargo operations. The first phase of the new terminal will be an international terminal with two aero bridges and the second phase will be a domestic terminal with three aero bridges. The present runway is 2970 m long which enables the airport to accommodate large aircrafts like Boeing 747 and Airbus A330. The Instrument Landing System at Coimbatore Airport is expected to become functional soon.
Coimbatore airport has the capacity to handle 40 MT of cargo at a time now. The integrated cargo complex under construction at Peelamedu will be having double the capacity. An Automatic Storage and Retrieval System is also to be installed at a cost of US$ 16.65 million.
Flights at Coimbatore Airport
The domestic flights from Coimbatore Airport connect Coimbatore with Chennai, Madurai, Kochi, Calicut, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and New Delhi. International flights operate between Coimbatore-Singapore and Coimbatore-Sharjah. At present up to 6 aircrafts can be parked at a time in Coimbatore Airport.
The domestic flights are operated by Indian, Jet Airways, JetLite, Kingfisher Airlines, Paramount Airways and Spicejet. Silk Air and Air Arabia are operating the two international flights. The cargo services are operated by Air India Cargo and Kingfisher Xpress.
The passenger facilities at Coimbatore Airport include Rest Room, Doctor on request, Foreign Exchange counter, Banking counter, Restaurant, Duty Free Shop, STD on VCC card, Taxi service, cargo facility and Car Parking.
Expansion & Modernization
The Airport Authority of India has initiated a massive expansion and modernization program for Coimbatore Airport. Construction of a parallel taxiway will be part of the expansion program. This will help to reduce considerably the occupancy time of runway by each aircraft. With the addition of two more parking bays, 16 aircrafts can be parked in the parking area at a time.
Latest type of baggage handling systems, aerobridges and sliding doors will be provided in the new terminal. Lands in the nearby areas of Kalapatti and Chinniyampalayam are being acquired for the expansion of the airport. The airport will be able to handle 17 aircraft movements per hour. The construction of new terminal is to be completed in 2 years.
After the expansion the total carpet area will be 14000 sq meters on a two-storeyed terminal building. Aerobridges, Escalators and Elevators also will be installed during the modernization program. The passenger handling capacity of the airport will be doubled to 700 at a time.
A new parking system also will come up at Coimbatore Airport as part of its expansion and modernization program. The parking area will be expanded so as to accommodate 282 cars at a time. At present there is space to accommodate 140 cars only.
